Timber Deck Builders Melbourne

Expert Timber & Composite Deck Builders in Melbourne

At Totally Outdoors, we’re proud to be Melbourne’s leading specialists in timber and composite decking. With years of experience and hundreds of successful projects under our belt, we design, build, and support high-quality deck solutions tailored to suit your lifestyle and outdoor space.

Transform Your Outdoor Living

The classic Aussie deck has evolved—from a simple front porch to a fully-fledged backyard entertainment zone. Whether you’re entertaining guests, creating a quiet retreat, or extending your living space, a deck is a versatile and stylish solution.

Compared to concrete or paving, decking may be a premium option—but it offers significant benefits. Decks are ideal for sloped or uneven ground and provide a cooler, more comfortable surface during the hot Melbourne summers.

Designed for Your Lifestyle

A decking area is more than just a floor—it’s the heart of your outdoor experience. We’ll help you integrate custom features like built-in seating, privacy screens, steps, and handrails to enhance usability and style. Your deck can also lead seamlessly into garden pathways or landscaped areas, creating a natural flow throughout your yard.

Pair your deck with one of our custom verandah solutions to complete the perfect outdoor living space. Together, they form a beautiful and functional area the whole family can enjoy year-round.

What Decking Materials can you Suggest?

Timber & Composite Decking Materials

Over the past two decades, decking materials have evolved significantly. Where once only traditional timber options such as treated pine, merbau, and spotted gum were available, today’s market now includes advanced composite decking materials—a durable blend of wood fibre and plastic designed to meet modern demands.

Timber vs Composite: What You Need to Know

Composite decking has become an increasingly popular choice for homeowners seeking lower maintenance, longer-lasting, and more environmentally friendly solutions. Products like NewTechWood and Trex Decking are highly regarded for their durability and come with manufacturer warranties that help offer peace of mind. In areas prone to bushfires, composite materials can also provide a Bushfire Resistant Decking solution, making them ideal for high-risk zones.

That said, each composite brand offers different warranties, colours, textures, and fixing methods—so it’s important to understand these differences before making a final selection. We’re here to guide you through that process.

Timber Decking: Classic & Character-Rich

For those who prefer the natural look and feel of real wood, merbau remains Melbourne’s most widely used timber decking material—and has been for over 50 years. Known for its strength and longevity, merbau performs exceptionally well in outdoor conditions, though it does require regular maintenance to maintain its appearance.

While treated pine is an option, we generally don’t recommend it due to its lower durability. Instead, Australian hardwoods such as spotted gum offer a great alternative, especially when you want your deck to be a standout feature.

Our Material Options

At Totally Outdoors, we primarily work with Trex and NewTechWood composite decking, but we’re happy to accommodate your preferred materials—just let us know your choice prior to quotation. We’ll make sure you’re fully informed on:

  • Manufacturer warranties

  • Maintenance requirements

  • Colour and texture options

  • Fixing systems

  • Performance expectations

Every deck is an investment—let us help you choose the right materials to ensure it performs beautifully for years to come.

Manufacturers’ Warranties

Timber Decking
As a natural product, timber does not come with a manufacturer’s warranty. It is graded according to species and natural characteristics. Variations and minor imperfections are standard and acceptable. Durability and maintenance requirements vary depending on species—our team will help you select the best option for longevity and appearance.

Composite Decking
Composite decking often comes with manufacturer warranties. Each brand includes care and maintenance guidelines to maintain warranty validity. Be sure to follow these for best performance and longevity.

Steel & Aluminium Products
All steel and aluminium components used by Totally Outdoors come with full manufacturer warranties, plus our 10-year workmanship guarantee when installed by our certified team.

Sample Warranties:

  • Victory Home Improvements: 30-Year Manufacturer Warranty

  • Ultimate Louvre System: 10-Year Warranty (by Louvre Master Pty Ltd.)

  • Bondor (SolarSpan & Shademaster): 10-Year Warranty backed by 60+ years of Australian composite technology

  • COLORBOND® Steel: Warranties for corrosion and weather resistance

  • Ziptrak® Blinds: 2-Year Warranty

  • HVG Fabrics for Blinds: 10-Year Warranty

  • Techome Electrical Controllers & Sensors: Manufacturer Warranty included

Our Project Process

We understand that once you’ve made the decision to go ahead, you want your project completed promptly and smoothly. Our process typically takes 7–8 weeks from deposit to site start, allowing time for:

1. Architectural drawings

2. Building permit approvals

3. Ordering and delivery of materials

We handle all permits, inspections, and coordination with building surveyors to ensure full compliance and a stress-free experience.

Important Notes About Permits

Do I Need a Permit?
In most cases—yes. If your decking area exceeds 10m² or is above 800mm in height, a building permit is required. Our quotes always include this unless otherwise specified.

What About an Owner Builder?
Being an “owner builder” means taking full responsibility for safety, compliance, and warranties. This is often suggested by unregistered builders who are not authorised to contract work over $10,000. We strongly advise against this approach.

Additional Council Approvals
Some projects may require planning permits, report & consent, or fire regulation compliance. These can add 5–12 weeks to the timeline depending on council processing times. We handle these on your behalf, but additional fees and waiting times may apply.

Cooling-Off Period
By law, a minimum 7-day cooling-off period applies after signing a contract before works or associated costs can commence.

Why Building Permits Matter

Obtaining a building permit ensures:

  • An independent Building Surveyor has reviewed and approved your project

  • Mandatory inspections are carried out

  • Warranties remain valid

  • Compliance with local and state regulations

  • Protection against future issues (e.g. resale, fines, forced removal)

Peace of Mind is Priceless.
When you choose Totally Outdoors, we take care of the entire process, including council applications, permits, and compliance—so you don’t have to.
